[Roadsters] Voltage regulator

Greetings. My 69' has had some mods by the previous owner but I too have some gauge issues.   For ex:  My aftermarket tach is erratic.  At idle it's fine and cruising steady it's fine.  But if I"m accelerating, it can jump wildly up to 7k, then down to as low as 1k (and everywhere in between), and I know the engine isn't doing that at all.  What really makes it crazy is leaving it in 5th gear (let's say at 50mph) and then flooring it without downshifting.  It starts jumping wildly up and down while I'm on the gas.  My temp and oil pressure gauges work perfect. My fuel gauge is off but I don't think it has anything to do with the v.r.  It's just an aftermarket gauge trying to work with an original and working fuel sender.IF ANYONE HAS INPUT ON MY ERRATIC TACH, I'm all ears.Thank you.

Making sure you know there are two voltage regulators in the 311.One is up under the dash and directly regulates the gauges. The other is in the engine bay and regulates everything else.Does your mechanic know that?Paul/Annapolis

So my mechanic says the voltage regulator is causing some of my gauges to malfunction, specifically the temp and fuel gauge.  Says a new one is $180 or an after market one is $100,  Seems excessive to me.  Are there any other options for replacing or repairing the voltage regulator I have?  Thanks.
