No. Engines are designed to run optimally at a particular temperature range, generally 185-195 degrees F. The cooling system should maintain that range in "normal" driving conditions, which may or may not not include 100 degrees F ambient temperatures for extended periods.
Your stock 2-row may work. You won't know until you try it. A 3-row (recored stock or after market aluminum) may do nothing more than give you peace of mind.
A 165 thermostat only means the thermostat opens at 165. It doesn't mean the cooling system will keep the water temperature at165.
FWIW, I'm replacing my stock radiator with a 3-row aluminum because it's starting to leak at the sides, and the aluminum radiator was under $200 vs $300 to recore the stock radiator.

I got an aluminum champion 2 row for my 67 1600. Fit perfectly. Shroud fit perfectly. Car runs cold with a 165 degree thermostat

I've been considering a 3 row fan cooled radiator, mines fine holds at 190 or a little higher..worries me..do they do much better?..i still will keep the stock one..
