No cooler is not always better. The right operating temperature is what you want. Your best performance will be when it runs in the right temp range. First thing you should do us take the temp using an IR temp sensor other other method to make sure the dash gauge isn't lying to you. If it's really hot or cold do something about it to get it to the proper operating temp and stable there.
