I thought that I've seen a late model car with vintage plates - but far from
"original".

found this on a corvair site:

Stopped to ask a guy in BLack LM CL550 Benzo that had the Black/GOld plates with
the 7 letters.

Per the owner of the car, he says that they are carbon fiber plates that are
available from a website Cr8aplate.com. and they cost him $100 each!!!

I did a search for Ct8aplate.com and could not find it, But i did find
Cr8aPl8.com.....

You have to drill down to find the "State Correct" plates....
They offer plastic "Show Plates" that dont have the state name at the top, but
you can actually have a line of text there along with up to 9 raised large
letters in the "normal position"

Now, when you get to the "State Correct" Plates, according to the site, they
make heavy gauge aluminum plates that, according to the site, are legal in some
states and approved for use by some DMV's.

Of coures, CA is the red headed step child, and they have had to stop making
California plates for the Yellow/Black 56-62 plates and the Black and Gold
63-69 plates. I cant recall if they have had to stop production on the latter
gen plates.

They make some great authentic looking plates and according to the site, they
are working to get all the "State Correct" plates approved by DMV's across the
country.

$29.95 and up to $59.00 for a plate if I recall correctly.

Accroding to the guy with the Black Benzo.... when I asked him if get hassled
about the plates, he says "Yes", they tell that they are not legal (obvious for
a late Benz) but are actually copies of the regular plates with numbers/letters
that were issued by CA Dmv. (He says he has a friend that is a Chipy that signs
off on his fix-it tickets)

I'n not interested in putting vintage plates on my LM cars, i more concerned in
getting them back on my vintage cars.
