This is a definitive read about the parallel lives of Nissan and Ford.
Written by famous journalist David Halberstam. In the first chapter,
the reckoning details a government insider who goes to Detroit to warn
the moronic industrialists of the Asian threat developing threatening
Detroit's future. Leaders either refused to give him an audience, or
politely showed him the door. The rest of the book alternates btween
the goings-on of both companies beginning from before WWII when the
American quality control guru Fred Taylor went to Japan after no one
else in Dtroit wd listen to him. He remained there in safety during
and after the war.
If like the old Datsuns and enjoy a good book I highly recommend you
read this great industrial history filled with personalities like Mr K
and Henry Ford II. Get this gem used on the web. I got my hardcover
for $2. Printed in 1985, when the Japs finally let go of import
restrictions. My dad spent zero on advertising until 1977, always
short of inventory until the bond market collapse in 1979. 1980 the
little dealership made zero when interest rates went to 20%
