[6pack] TR6 horn relay

You’ll find several examples of the Lucas windtone (WT618) high and low note on eBay.co.uk popularly fitted to all Jaguars of the 60s/70s and other prestige British makes. Not cheap but they also were fitted on side screen TRs as well. A penetrating blast of sound which is what’s needed in modern traffic.

Duke of Wellington: “By God, Sir - so you have!”

They seem to be getting worse, because I've replaced them twice in the past 5 years and they currently don't work. Yes, the button itself is problematic too. I usually test them with a 12v battery first. Does anyone know where to buy horns that will last, or should I just remain hornless? - Larry Young

The relay is grounded through the horn push to the steering shaft through the link wire around the rubber coupling to the rack and through a ground link from the rack to the frame. Any issues with that chain of events will cause the problem. Jumpering the relay will bypass all the steering column connections and will be a good diagnosis tool.

All the little stuff inside the steering wheel must be just right. The steering column itself must have a solid ground (to send to the relay via the button). Check the ground wire that goes thru/around the steering column rubber coupling and the ground wire that connects to the steering gear box.

>> A newbie question from a 31-year 1976 TR6 owner – Where’s the horn relay? Horn is working only very occasionally and I figure the easiest first thing to look at is the contacts on the relay. I’ve included a picture of the fuse box area and a few of the relays – which one is the horn or is it somewhere else? I have Dan Master’s book so if it’s not the relay, I know where to go next. Thanks. Dennis Culligan, Highland, NY
