The later TR6's have two power feeds to the coil. One 12v during cranking, one ballasted for normal running. If you were not getting the 12v during cranking then I could imagine it starting on the ballasted feed as you let the ignition key return while the engine is still turning. Check that you have close to 12v at the coil while cranking and if not, suspect a wire, connector or the ignition switch.

1976 TR6 - "Always" starts the first time. The last few times I started it, it balked.  I finally figured out that it won't start while the key is turned but as I release the key, it starts.  Starter solenoid? Thanks.
