When I first put my '74-1/2 car on the road after restoring it (thinking at the time that it was a '75), I had the dual stainless system from Moss. I had a "warm" street profile grind on the cam, the head was ported and polished, and the header was machine matched to the head surface. I'd done all this right, but I had a lot of trouble with fuel percolation in city traffic, in Vancouver, Canada, so we're talking atmosphere temps in the high 70's, occasionally low 80's...not crazy hot. And, it was too loud. I had a custom heat shield made to protect the fuel bowls, which helped only a little. After one summer of grief, I took it all off and went back to the stock pipe and muffler system. If I noticed any decrease in performance, it was marginal. And...the true TR6 sound is more attractive to me than the racket that I got from the dual mufflers. I run stock carbs and what I have done, which made a huge difference, is enlarge the air intake holes in the air filter box. So to summarize, mine's strictly a street car. I have a warmed up street cam profile, port and polished head, the stock manifold, pipes and muffler and increased air intake to the carbs. My car's faster than any other later-model TR6 that I've gone up against. The early cars had more HP to begin with so I don't compare my car to one of those.

After 20 years, I need to replace the custom exhaust and the header that came on my 73 in 1997.? ?Looking at Ansa,? but wanted to get folk's opinions and recommendations.? ? On the header, I'm wondering if I should simply go back to an exhaust manifold that's correct for my year,? ?I hear that the later exhaust manifold actually flows okay.? ? ? This is strictly a street car that typically doesn't see high revs.? ? If I stick with header, the choice seems to be Pacesetter or one of the SS ones from England.? ?Head shaved to give about 9.3 compression.? ?Early TR6 PI type camshaft.? ?Crane ignition, SU carbs. KN filters 
The general tone of on-line comments on monza exhausts for TR6 isn't enthusiastic. 
I was advised that getting a pre-built exhaust may be way to go for TR6 as needed bends are trickier for a local exhaust shop.

Bruce, 

I went with a Bell sport dual exhaust for my 72. It has the stock dual 
down pipe manifold. I think the 73 used the same manifold. It is a dual 
muffler system. 

Wonderful fit and sound is great. 

I have Bell on all my Triumphs. Very satisfied.

I have a custom SS exhaust on my TR6. The tricky part is having the right 
equipment to properly bend the stainless tubing. Most muffler/exhaust shops 
don't have it, and they ruin the tubing when they try to bend it. Mine was 
made with pre-bent curves that were then welded up after very careful 
measuring (not by me). 

I have 2 friends with the Rimmer big bore SS exhaust. It is a complete 
system, including the header. There are 2 versions, 1 that terminates in 1 
big pipe, one that has doubles. They both sound great, fit great, and look 
great. If I ever replace mine, that's what I will get. NFI 

I have also heard great things about Bell exhausts, no first hand 
experience however.

My '72 had an English stainless steel 2 1/4 single pipe exhaust system that was recommended for fast street applications. It had a very nice sound. But the tail pipe has a quirkly look about it. It was up turned at about a 30 degree angle to avoid scraping and the tip had a 90 degree cut. Some do not care for the look and others complained that it invited rain to accumulate in the pipe. My fix was to put an old Falstaff can over it when it was not being driven. 
If I were to do it over again I would still use that system. Very well made.
