[6pack] 6pack Digest, Vol 21, Issue 6

A lot to digest here.  Seems like the stack of washers idea would be my first choice.  Will it shine and then not shift? After adding oil it went through the gears once while on the jack.  It was so smooth I thought the problem was solved. When I put it in neutral and depressed the clutch pedal there was noticeably less resistance and it wouldn't go through the gears.  Had my son check the fluid in the MC and it was proper, EXCEPT the color.  Somewhat dark.I'm going to just go ahead and order a "new" MC and pray.  You know, the funny thing is thatI checked the serial numbers on the rear tires and went to the Michelin web site and found out they were bornin 1993.  New tires on the front.  The freaking TIRES have lasted longer than anything!!  I saw an Ad in Hemmingslast night showing an old man (like me except I'm just 67) standing next to an older 'Vette in his driveway withthe caption "It was parked in your mind long before your driveway".  We took a TR6 for a test drive in 1970 andI fell in love with the look,,,,,finally got the '74 in '98.  What can I say,,,,,,,,,

There you are you old Six Pack!!As shared with Triumphs list: ?I thought I had the silver bullet today. ?I had read what type transmission oil to use.Had a couple ideas working. ?One was go to NAPA and get the oil. ?I did with the nicecounterman help find a Quart of SAE 80W90 and a pretty cool hand pump that would pump it upthrough the drain hole. ?I found a hose to which I wrapped the right amount of tape so this tubewent into the hole without losing a drop. ?Generally, I got the entire quart in the gearbox with very littlespillage. ?I couldn't wait to fire the beast up and run through the gears. ?Which I did. ?The first go?through went like BUTTER. Then I took it out of gear eased up on the clutch and went back to square 1No entry into the holy 4speed. ?Took a look at the clutch master and I could see dark fluid. So, I guess?my next purchase will be new gaskets. ? Do I need more fluid in the transmission? ?I still can't getthe bolt out where I could see it's being topped off. ? Hey
Jacksonville guys, any hands on helpwould be greatly appreciated.. ?For example, my wife has two Dr. Appointments tomorrow. ?While at NAPAI picked up the Haynes Repair Manual For '98 Maxima hoping to get a breakthrough clue about the?mysterious shut off switch.Hertz is getting rich off us. ?Anyway, I'll post this in the Six Pack also. ?The more the merrier.

Hey John,

It's not the correct fix of course, but why don't you try my trick of shimming out the slave cylinder with two stacks of washers. You need about a half inch of shim, shouldn't need longer bolts but maybe. I'm telling you it worked for me for years, until I had the internal fork issue fixed. As I said before (not trying to be a know-it-all) but there's no way this symptom is related to the oil level. The oil doesn't get up to the clutch plate. You can't get it into gear because it's spinning, not because it's low on oil.

Now, I didn't have a broken fork pin, so the shims may not help, but worth a try. You're going to have to get the tranny pulled to replace that fork pin.  I'm not certain, but I believe working once, and then back to the same problem, is a big indication of the fork pin being sheared. It slips back around to the correct spot and works once, and then it's out of alignment again and doesn't work at all.

The biggest advice I can give you is this. Fix the Maxima! A Triumph doesn't like being counted on as primary transportation. They can tell. Ever wonder why everybody you meet at a gas-station 'used' to have one?

good luck,

Sloane :)

Understood - and good to know. But just curious. Will it shift OK sometimes, and then refuse to go into gear as this symptom sounds to be?
