[6pack] my darned clutch slave

Hi John

First: Dale's right. If yo had to add fluid and re-bleed the system after you'd just bled it, where did the fluid go? The clutch hydraulic system is very short so it won't be hard to find. Make sure you pull back the carpet in the foot well and check the master cylinder inside the firewall. That's where you're most likely to see the leak.

If, when you say you added fluid, you really mean that you re-bled it just for the sake of trying it gain, and you are certain that there is no fluid leak or air in the system, then the hydraulic system is not the problem and the clutch most probably is. I wrote a lengthy posting about this a few months ago in response to someone's similar symptoms: Clutch works OK when it's cold, but fails when it gets warm. The problem, barring a hydraulic issue, is the clutch pressure plate. They've been known to fail when they get hot due to poor metallurgy. I know of what I speak...trust me.

Use the middle hole on the release lever.

This stuff works great, of course you will have enough to do all the hub splines in the known universe.

I still have 90% left ?

I don't know what the correct spec is but my general rule is that if it
is supposed to move, use grease; and if it is not supposed to move use
anti-seize. ( I get kind of annoyed at the people who demand only
grease where it should be anti-seize. And generally anti-seize is a very
poor grease substitute on moving parts.)

However I believe the trunnion is supposed to use oil so what do I know?

I'm wondering if there is anyone there:)) ?I changed my clutch slave cylinder and bled it. ?Went for a drive andafter sitting in a drive through a few minutes had a heck of a time getting it in gear. ?I learned a long time agonot to take the car out of gear in situations like that. ?After some crunching of gears I got home. ?On adviceof one more experienced than me I re-bled the thing with my son pushing the pedal and me under the car.?Finally after seeing no more air bubbles and having a good amount of resistance I went for a short drive.Returning home and about to turn into my driveway I had to crunch the gears again. ?More fluid was added and?more pumping etc. I felt confident. ?I got to the end of my street today before I had to do a U turn and come home.I wonder whats wrong? ? ?There are different spots on the rod into the slave and frankly I don't remember?which hole I have it set at. ?Would changing that make a difference? ?Should I go to the hole nearer theslave or father awa
y, should it come to that. ?Ideas, opinions, prayers??John Summers, ?Jacksonville Florida'74 TR 6

Hey guys,
Anybody on-list close enough to come to North/Western NC next weekend? The Triumph Club of the Carolinas annual event 'The Gathering' is at Sheldon Vineyards in Dobson, NC. Info at www.triumphclub.org<http://www.triumphclub.org>. It's a 3 day event, but Friday is mostly a self-guided tour around some nice mountain and foot-hill back roads and Sunday morning is a really fun auto-cross. The main car show is all day Saturday of course. Just to be clear, this is April 15, 16, & 17. The vineyard is about 10 miles south of the NC/VA line on I-77.

Maybe reply if you might be there. I will be as long as the weather is nice. I think I'll drive the Spit this year.

John
The normal hole to use is the center hole.?

If you have had to add fluid after bleeding then where did the fluid go?? Check to see where the fluid went.

One thought here is to safely jack the car up and see if you have excessive movement in the clutch fork. This can be done with the slave rod disconnected from the arm. A small piece of pipe may help for leverage to see if you feel a catch in the movement.? If so then you may have a broken pin in the clutch fork.
