Reliably? 
 
You could wire an LED or pilot light in series with the motor, this would  
tell you when it is running, not off.  This would detect open circuits and  
motor failures if it is not a short.......of course there is always the  
temperature gauge or you could use a hi temp idiot light on the dash set  slightly 
above normal operating temp
