Bruce, you might want to talk to Ted Schumacher of TSI.  Ted has a new  
replacement line that is made of flexible braided steel.  I have several  and 
they work like a charm.  I don't know about how others do it but I  certainly 
don't drop the dash.  I usually end up on my head with a  flashlight in my 
mouth and perhaps the ash tray and one of the other gauges just  loose but 
not disconnected.
