October 14, 2005

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
Race car driver and auto detailer Duncan Emmons, a Coachella Valley pioneer,
died Saturday in San Diego at age 70.
The owner of Duncan Emmons Body and Muffler Shop in Rancho Mirage had a
reputation as the man to see for a one-of-a-kind paint job.

He moved to Rancho Mirage in the mid-1950s, when he was 19, to start his own
business.

"There were only about 400 people living in Rancho Mirage at the time," Emmons
told The Desert Sun in 2003. "It made being in the body shop business a pretty
easy deal."

A 25-year veteran of vintage car racing, Emmons suffered a fatal heart attack
while racing his 1953 Kurtis 500S at his favorite racing event, the Coronado
Classic Speed Festival, a news release said. About one-fourth of a mile from
the finish line in his first race, officials drew the red flag, as Emmons
appeared to lose control of his vehicle and veer off the track. The race ended
safely, however, with no competing cars affected by the accident.

Emmons was pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where he
was taken by ambulance from the racetrack at Naval Air Station in Coronado,
according to the release.

Emmons, who raced the car just two months earlier at the Monterey Historic
Races, maintained a winning position as he maneuvered through 11 laps of the
challenging 2.6 mile course. Final race results listed Emmons as the official
fourth place finisher.

Emmons was born Feb. 19, 1935, in Detroit. His family moved to Southern
California in 1943, and he learned the auto body business while living in Los
Angeles. After moving to the Coachella Valley and going into business, he had
his share of celebrity clientele, including Red Skelton and family and friends
of Elizabeth Taylor, the release said.

Emmons' survivors include his wife of 36 years, Darah Emmons of Rancho Mirage;
four sons, Duncan Emmons Jr. of Palm Desert, Dan Emmons of Palm Springs and
Scott and Jeff Preble of Rancho Mirage; one daughter, Catherine Emmons of
Studio City; and four grandchildren.

Services are at 10 a.m. Oct. 22 at Wiefels and Sons Mortuary in Palm Springs.
The family suggests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
