Is Steve Earle still as tight on originality? I can't imagine him allowing
that sort of mod.
Allowing some upgrading on the A's certainly makes it a bit easier to find
parts, but aside from a run of bad king pins a few years ago, I can't see any
reason to go to B front end bits. Similarly, asssuming availability of pads,
the original Lockheed calipers work just fine. The MGC is a completely
different Girling system, and I still don't know why anyone was asking about
that in the same post as MGA/MGB.
I can't see wanting to fit a heavier B diff in an A, and the gear sets are a
lot easier to change in the early rear end. Similarly the A non-synch trans
is a sweeter box, particularly with close ratio gears, than the late box, and
uses up a tad less power as well.
The engines do make life easier, as the A crank is a perennial weak spot,
especially thge 1500/1600. I do have a fondness for the 3 main B, mind you,
and run one in my TVR.
And if the Bs are beating the As, that's because most of the A racers aren't
running REAL MGAs (the kind with 2 cams!).
