OK- here's a summary of replies so far -
 - most RTV's are similar and will "do" most applications
 - exceptions to look out for are (i) O2 sensors and (ii) heat (as in exhaust)
 - squirty cans are much easier to use, and therefore better,  than
hard-to-squeeze tubes
 - the Permatex and FelPro web sites and booklets cover "everything"
        - and therefore aren't all that much practical use!
 - nobody seems to use gasket adhesive
 - Hylomar is best for frequently disassembled parts - with or without gaskets.
        - also OK with slightly oily parts.
