Having 'been there' myself, I converted to an 8" Ford about a year ago.  Same 
gear ratios available, actually heavier than stock, and no discernable 
performance difference.  Considerably improved peace of mind.  Had a bit of a 
discussion about originality with the VDCA, but even they relented on this as 
a safety conversion.  John Harkness
