I heard the same thing several times, so a few years ago I built an alum. air 
box for my Datsun 1600 vintage roadster. It makes a big difference on hot 
days when pushing the car hard in a race.
Don't know any secrets-just a box, with a curved baffle in the rear, to feed 
the rear carb. and reduce turbulence. I cut holes in the side of the box, 
using a gasket as a pattern, so box side is sandwiched between carbs. and 
manifold. On the front, I used alum. and utilized all the grill area to the 
side of the radiator and fed air to the box.
I made everything with construction paper and tape, then transferred these 
templates to alum. Box is assembled with sheet metal screws for ease of 
fitting in and removing. With a little polish, box looks good. 
It does make a difference in hot weather performance. GO FOR IT!
