Ways to magnetize things.....

1.  Rub it in one direction with a strong permanent magnet.

2.  Coil some wire around it (maybe 50 turns or so of #14 or #16 gauge wire), 
then put this in series with a high current load (like a headlamp or large 
taillamp bulb), then connect it to a 12V source, like a battery.

3.  Point it North and hit one end sharply with a hammer (this works, 
really...just not a very strong field results).
