One weekend we found a really easy fix for a FF where the Lucas starter
Bendix was "walking into" the flywheel. On this particular FF the lower
frame rail tube ran right by, and slightly below, the starter. We simply
took a tie-wrap and were able to put it around the frame rail and also over
the barrel of the Bendix, resting just on the teeth (i.e. just before the
barrel). Not too tight!! Believe it or not, it was enough to keep the
Bendix from dancing in yet loose enough to let the starter spin the Bendix
in (the tie-wrap slips up on the actual barrel). Then after it started, the
Bendix slid back and the tie-wrap settled back onto the teeth. Wouldn't
have believed it if I hadn't seen it. But it worked. Sure a lot easier
than rigging up some manual lock-back device, or springs, or whatever.

By the way, the "dancing in" can be caused more by a harmonic, than braking.
Probably both contribute to the problem. I've seen 'em dance in just revving
'em up sitting in the garage. That is, just revving the engine can cause
them to move into the flywheel. Only Lucas could conjure up such a weird
problem.

Good luck.
