Dear Vintage Racers:
When was the last time you were able to drive your car at speed
on an airport runway with hundreds of spectators cheering you
on?
When was the last time four fighter jets screamed over your head
only 200 feet off the ground?
When was the last time you were able to drive your race car "at
speed" through the city streets?
When was the last time you were saluted and called "Sir" when you
entered a race track?
When was the last time you had a nice, flat, clean concrete
paddock with built in canopy tie downs?
When was the last time you saw four Morgans racing together,
including one from the 30s?
When was the last time you went to a race and it didn't rain
(well, OK, but only once during the night)?
Last weekend, in Virginia Beach, VA, over 150 racers experienced
all the above as they attended the first "Race at the Base."
This event put on by the City of Virginia Beach in cooperation
with the U.S. Navy was a quite a feat of logistics and
organization. Thanks to the efforts of Bob Williams and Bill
Thumel who coordinated this race weekend in conjunction with
SVRA. Although not an official SVRA event, the SVRA staff was
there making sure everything was SAFE, FAIR & FUN.
The course set up on the major runway at NAS Oceana, was 2.8
miles long, had about 10 turns and was a blast to drive. Most
vintage racers are not used to driving a course marked by pylons
and tire walls, but as the weekend progressed lap times got
quicker proving you can teach old dogs (racers) new tricks
(tracks)!!
>From the sounds of it, this was the first _annual_ Race at the
Base. So for those of you who missed it, you'll have another
chance next year to experience this unique and wonderful event.
