My understanding is that the weight of the driver's gold chains and other
jewelry make the car uncompetitive.

OK, I'll drop another naive question onto the list: does anybody vintage
race the early de Tomaso Pantera's? If not, is there a good reason? I hear
that driving them quickly can be a handful. Just curious, since they seem to
be the Italian equivalent of V8 powered TVR's, and they first appeared when
I was a drueling young teenager. The guy in the showroom told me not to
touch what I couldn't pay for ... a line I didn't hear again until a
friend's stag years later.
