Please don't try to use Plexiglas. It will splinter in a crash.
Use a polycabonate such as Lexan MR6 or MR10. There are several other similar
brands.
This material is available at most plastics supply houses. You may have to buy
a whole sheet ($200-250 for 4x8, 3/16" thick). You may be able to find a
plastics fabricator that has scraps for considerably less.
A company called "PRO GLASS" will custom make one for you. This is a good idea
if you need a lot of curvature.
