My point to Don (which was sent privately and not intended for publication)
was that all street races have three inherent problems: 1. No paddock space.
2. Little opportunity for passing. 3. No room for error because of armco
or concrete. VARA faced the same problem that every other sanctioning group
faces when it puts on a street race and I don't think it is fair to single
VARA out, particularily when Don complained about the paddock space in an
e-mail to the site BEFORE the event.
I have participated in many vintage street races (St. Pete, Pittsburgh,
Kansas City, Dallas, Grand Bahama, Tampa --and -- yes --Monaco) and have
throughly enjoyed most of them. But I went to them with the attitude that I
wouldn't have much paddock space or passing room and that there would be
terrible consequences if I screwed up. I think the comparison with Monaco is
fair. I guarantee that the paddock space was smaller and the track was just
as tight, but everyone had a good time because they went to it with their
eyes open to the limitations and lived with them. Don's complaints about the
LAGP could apply to Monaco or any of the other street races. Does that make
VARA the culprit?
