Graham Hill crashed a Team Lotus 49 at the USGP at Watkins Glen on the fall
of 1969. The shunt broke both his legs and the 49 ended on its top. Rob
Walker's contemporary race report in Road & Track said the monocoque was not
damaged, although Doug Nye reported in his subsequent book, Theme Lotus that
the car was destroyed. The car has always been owned by the Chapman family
and is now raced by Colin's son Clive. (The car won its Monaco Historics
race this May) One of the Brit magazines, in its coverage of Monaco repeated
the Nye story, implying the car was a fake. (Vintage race car owners note
that even the legitimacy of a car that has never left "factory' ownership can
be questioned.) Does anyone know of any high quality photos of the monocoque
of Hill's car immediately after the shunt during the October 5, 1969 USGP at
the Glen?
