It seems every year we start the season with this discussion.
Doing stupid things on the track (or in the world in general) is often
caused by a lack of training, a big problem in vintage where most
drivers do only a few events a year and seem to ignore schools or
practice sessions to improve skills.
The second biggest problem is ego. Middle aged guys especially seem to
have a big problem admitting they don't know everything or are not the
'world's greatest'. I keep running into this obstacle as I train people
in fiber optics. It's obvious in many vintage drivers.
The third problem in vintage racing is the issue of 'more money than
sense'.
That said, I must say the drivers in my group (Marlboro/Lola cup) at the
Jefferson 500 last weekend were better than I remember ever seeing!
