Clark,
I can be you and the other on the Vintage list think I forgot about this
question you mailed on the 14th of April. Nope!, just being very lazy
getting a couple pictures scanned and of course finding the time to scan
the darn things. I have some more trip pictures coming on this little
jewel (to me folks)... :-).
The story intro: (read this as insanity, perhaps!)...
About a year ago, a friend was looking at a one of a kind H-mod lost in
a Wisonsin barn and at the same time had found a '48 midget Sprint car
to restore, so he passed on the H-mod. A few months later, we were
talking about unusual cars which have appeal to the 'demented', thus I
asked him for some faxed pictures of the 'barn car'. Little did I know
this car would catch my eye and the price appeared OK!
The 'purchased' 54 Siam is a one of kind tube-frame H-mod built by
Purdue Univ. in 1954 and raced from 1954-1964 in the Mid-West. I'm
still waiting for the history documents the past owner had accumulated
and it's racing past. I will share that when I get it, which does not
appear to be soon, how can you push a retired ex-racer who is 70+.
Anyway, on the weekend of April 4th a friend and myself took a road trip
to Wisonsin from Denver via Omaha, yada yada, to a small town to meet
with the 'broker/purveyor' of this fine little machine.
We found the Siam tucked a way in an old barn (really folks) outside
Milwaukee, WI. it is rough but original. The Siam looks like a
Turner/Morgan cross on a very robust tube-frame. Power is from a Crosley
eng. and the drive train is Triumph. No, I have not started on the
restoration, but I have got a few things for the basic preps. My
biggest problem is going to be time, patience and $$, as it is going to
be a challenge to bring back.
I have a couple pictures at the following link
http://www.csd.net/~suiter/siam.html
These pictures were provided by Bill who was holding the car for the
owner these past few years. The car in the background is a 48 Indy car
which I understand sold for about $100K in the condition you see it with
parts in apple barrels
If you get a page not found, your faster than me. I still have to build
the page :-).
I will as time permits update this page with more pictures, road trip
and detail of the
H-mod. Perhaps in a couple of years, it will hit the Vintage circuit in
RMVR and VARA.
Enjoy ---- Don s...
