RESULTS OF Fo8 SEALANT THREAD=E2=80=94Thanks again to all who =
contributed

We had around 25 responses of one sort or another, several good =
suggestions and a couple of =E2=80=9Cheads up=E2=80=9D regarding =
=E2=80=9Caggressive=E2=80=9D motor oil potential reaction with some =
sealants.
Most popular with 7 users was HYLOMAR BLUE
Next was PERMATEX AVIATION with 5 users
Then came YAMABOND #5 with 3 users
Followed by unspecified SILICONE with 2 users
COPPER COAT, PERMATEX BROWN and INDIAN HEAD SHELLAC each had 1 user
Several responders suggested that perhaps if the mating surfaces (see =
below) were in good shape then no sealant al all might be the way to =
go...
One responder (with a couple of like minded individuals)suggested using =
an old liner cleaned up and true as a sort of hone to polish the =
=E2=80=9Cland=E2=80=9D in the block. This might also work to emphasize =
highs and lows in the land if a bit of Prussian blue was applied to the =
land prior to using the =E2=80=9Chone=E2=80=9D.

Interesting that the factory workshop manuals do not specify a =

Basic Reasons:

1. Unless absolutely essential, the company policy was not to recommend =
any one product over another except for things such as oils and fuel =
octane ratings which latter are calculated still in two different ways.
2. Some products are known in only a few markets and not all of them. =
Company was supplying product to over 100 different markets.
3. The cars were only designed to last for a maximum period of 10 years, =
so why bother as mostly the cars would be maintained by the dealers for =
all but the simplest tasks.

Yes, I remember each car handbook described how to set valve clearances =
and ignition timing whereas today, the handbook in my wife=E2=80=99s new =
car points out the dangers of drinking battery acid.

I do recall some manuals and service bulletins called for a sealant =
called DumDum - and of course, few people if any outside the U.K. have =
ever heard of DumDum. Even this list has speculated on it!
