Paul, 
Take out your plugs and rotate the engine by hand while sticking your  finger 
(you choose the finger) in the #1 plug hole so that it is "sealed".   The 
proper stoke will become self evident by the pressure blowing by your  finger.  
If you have not done so already, make sure that little marker hole  on the 
pulley is at TDC as it is supposed to be.
