I agree with your guess, the bead protrudes about 1/8" so if you get to 1/4"
on each side that will give you a finished clearance of 1/8".

How wide should I make the gaps on the sides of the bonnet? (This would be
before any beading or beading-cover is put in.)

I'm guessing a 1/4" on each side of the bonnet, but then, I've never owned
or rebuilt a Tr before.
