If a coil with a internal ballast resistor is replaced with a coil that needs
a external ballast resistor, point pitting will occur.

There are certain instances where a external ballast coil can be run without
a resistor. If the engine never sees low speed operation and / or does not
use a charging system, a resistor is not needed. This is common practice with
Formula Fords.
