I don't know much about Canada, but Mexico gets pretty excited about  a big 
box of tools.  They fear you are going down to take a mechanics  job.....yeah, 
right.  Coming back to the US with practically anything  non-pharmaceutical is 
relatively easy..oh and no avocados, sausages, live birds,  etc.  There are 
8-9 different agencies at the border than can stop you from  entering.  Don't 
get me started on US Customs.
 
Also, and I was in Mexico last night, NEVER take a firearm or any sort of  
ammunition across the border, even by accident, unless you'd like to see the  
inside of a Mexican prison.
