It's a good idea to get everything off the engine before you remove it. Trying to remove a stuck head stud with the engine moving around on an engine stand or the floor can be frustrating. I prefer to work on removing the head when the engine is firmly attached to the chassis. I've removed my GT-6+ engine several times and I take everything I can off the block before I lift it out.
