GT6 engine removal

I am in the process of removing the engine from the GT6.  How  much of 
the engine should I take apart first?  I have removed the manifolds, 
alternator, radiator, fan and yes I loosened the front crank shaft nut.  
(I learned that lesson the hard way.)  But should I take off the head 
also? I thought that would lose the lifting rings, but I just checked 
and they are fastened to the block.
