(1) Does replacing/repairing the shaft, etc require removal of the oil pump

assembly (dropping the sump), or can the work be done from the top through
the
dizzie. The shaft in question apparently drives both via the camshaft. Any
recommendation form those who've been there.

I hate to say this but you may want to have a look at the oil pump anyway.
I once suffered from a sudden onset of low oil pressure on my MGB many
years ago and the cause was an oil pump failure. The outer scroll (the
part with the internal lobes) split, increasing the clearances. When this
happens the scroll now rides on the ID of the pump housing with a greatly
increased pressure which will cause accelerated wear and increased load on
the pump shaft and drive gears. I would be concerned that the pump shaft
problems you have may have this as a root cause and just changing the shaft
will only lead to more problems down the line.

I've never torn into a TRactor motor but if it is like most other engines
the internal rotor is a press fit onto the shaft and the pump must be
removed in anyevent.

Dave
