John, there at least shouldn't be any contacts or connections inside the
steering box. The wires just pass through it on their way to the control
head (horn button & turn signal switch). If someone has replaced the wires,
I'd say that almost ensures that the problem will be with the wires or their
connections in the control head. My suggestion would be to start by
replacing the control head wires again, with the proper harness (Moss P/N
356-410). You can try making your own, but it's difficult to get it wrapped
well enough to avoid abrasion against the stator tube, while still small
enough to pass through the stator tube. Also tough to find the right
terminals for the control head, and the wrong ones will certainly cause
problems later. The right ones have a little tab that engages a hole in the
head, to keep them from turning under the nuts and shorting.
Since it appears a DPO has been at work ... also be sure your control head
doesn't turn as you turn the steering wheel. It's not supposed to, and the
constant flexing of the wires will eventually break something.
