Hi Graham,
I agree that there are far superior tires out there that handle much
better than redlines. But, in the case of this TR6, I want to keep the
appearance 100% original and I am very fond of the look of the 185-15
redlines on the car. My plan is actually to buy a set of 16x7 Panasports
and mount sticky, low profile performance tires on them for spirited
driving and then mount the restored steel wheels with redlines for car
shows, parades, etc. That is an expensive proposition and I have also
wondered whether I will actually want to go through the effort to jack up
the car and change out 4 wheels on a semi frequent basis or not! One set
or the other may end up sitting and rarely get used because I am too lazy
or don't have time to swap them out!
This whole TR6 Michelin redline dilemma is similar to that of the mid year
Corvette crowd (1963 - 1967). The mid year Vette collectors mount the
original skinny bias ply gold band or red band (depending on the year)
tires. Those tires also can't hold the road at all compared to modern
tires!
