IMO it's best to turn the lights off first anyway ... <g>

I can't think of anything near the regulator that would cause this, in fact
I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that would do it, but not cause
at least some lights to be on when the engine was running. Next time you
start it, look to see if any lights are on with the switch off, including
the headlights.

The dipstick was deleted at TS50000, your gearbox should have a square
headed plug in the side of it. Not sure offhand, but ISTR it's on the RH
side. The correct level is flush with the plug, although a little bit extra
won't hurt.

There has been lots of fuss made over using conventional GL-5 gear oil, it
supposedly will attack the brass components and lead to premature wear. I'm
not convinced it's really a problem ... but buying GL-4 oil is sure a lot
simpler and cheaper than doing a gearbox overhaul ! The original factory
recommendation for our cars (it changed around 1960) was for motor oil ...
based on a recommendation from British Frame and Engine, I'm using Valvoline
20W50 racing oil in mine. I plan to try Redline MTL as soon as I find a
local supplier for it.
