Ah well, Mark, I was kidding, of course! Actually, I've been driving
my Spitfire for over 15 years and only once has it left me stranded
and wishing for a cellphone. (Quick, knock on wooden dashboard right
away!!) Its few problems have been easily remedied, such as a bum
fool pump (the item whut stranded me - now I carry a spare!), squishy
clutch pedal, marginal battery charging. I've done maintanence and
general upgrades, but it has been one sweet vehicle. The GT6+ has
been a bit less dependable. It blew its tranny, squealed an
alternator bearing, and similar stuff. Then several weeks ago it
started leaking fool through the fool pump into the sump. Only the
tranny problem was expensive, and it cost me a lot of time too. But
hey, for a 33-year-old car it's doing pretty well. (We drove it up
to Monadnock today for a day hike. Lovely day, lovely ride! Windy.)
On the other hand, I assert that most everyone here on the Tr list is
better than the "average person on the street" at diagnosing and
treating an old car's ills, handling one with care (even while
driving aggressively), and doing the regular maintanence that keeps a
car young but is easily overlooked.
So all seriousness aside (and irregardless of everything else or
less), the concept of "...not requiring more than regular
maintenance" is in the eye of the beholder. [Now, how many more ways
can I fracture the English language? Do you prefer your mixed
metaphors shaken or stirred?]
This Tr list has been an invaluable resource! Thank you all!
