She was beautiful, and had the power to drive men wild. Sleek and
lovely, she was utterly irresistible, and I fell under her spell in a
heartbeat.

We had some great times together, back in the early days, but it wasn't
long before I began to suspect that something was very wrong. I
couldn't put my finger on it exactly, but I gradually came to believe
that she was rotten to the core.

As the months became years, her problems became all too apparent. When
we first met, she would take the occasional drink, just to be sociable,
but her consumption increased, and eventually it reached a point where
she was knocking back a quart every couple of hours. She started
smoking, too - heavily - despite all I could do to persuade her not to.
Soon, her skin started to lose its beautiful smoothness, and ghastly
reddish-brown pustules erupted all over her body.

In the end, I took her to see a specialist, who gave her a thorough
examination, and asked a lot of very personal questions. When he had
finished, he took me into a private office, alone, said, "Please sit
down, sir, this could come as a bit of a shock for you."

I blanched, and lowered myself into a convenient chair.

"Do you love her?" he asked, and I nodded, unable even to speak.

"That's good, because she needs a lot of love and attention right now. A
lot. Are you a rich man?"

My eyes lit up with hope. "Is there really a cure?" I begged. "I'm
not rich, no, but I will find the money somewhere, somehow, if it means
that she can be saved."

"Yes, there is a cure, but it will be painful, and it will take time.
It's not cheap, of course, but if you do nothing, I'm afraid that she
will be dead within a year."

"Anything! I'll do anything! How much time? How much money?"

"Several hundred hours at least, at thirty-five pounds an hour. Plus
parts. Plus VAT."

I leapt up and embraced him, despite the oil and the hydraulic fluid
that covered his professional attire. "Do it! Do it! Save her for
me, please!"
