Federal law in the US prohibits removing emission equipment for any vehicle
made since 1968 or so that is driven on a public road. All state law does
is establish how likely you are to be caught.
OTOH, if you're going to start modifying a "rare" car ... why not drop in a
complete Rover aluminum 4.3L (descendant of the 3.5L used in the TR8). That
would be fully legal, as long as you keep it's smog equipment with it. I
think it's actually lighter than the 6 banger; and even with full smog
equipment should make something like twice as much power ...
