Why substitute ?  P/N 107562, $10.50 @ TRF. Otherwise, felt padding is
readily available, ISTR I found mine at Home Depot.  If they don't have what
suits you, try McMaster-Carr :

The original was likely wool (mine had had moths in it!), but synthetic
seems to work just fine.

It had them originally.  Probably not absolutely essential, especially if
you don't mind the smell of gas in the trunk (or petrol in the boot,
whichever).
