A big can of worms here!

Are these steel, painted spokes.......steel,  chromed spokes........or SS 
spokes???

Yes......the way you check them is to take your spoke wrench (or like a 3/8 " 
box end wrench) and run it around the spokes..........ting, ting, ting, 
thunk......you've got a loose or broken spoke...........(Moss is now selling 
a nice wire wheel spoke wrench....385-800.......$10.95.......which looks like 
the one I have from "SnapOn".......Do grind off the pointy ends, in a rounded 
fashion,  until the the depth equals the width.....otherwise, the ends hang 
up on the next spoke on a 72 spoke wheel......should you have one........) 

If you have a very loose or broken spoke.....painted, or chorme plated steel 
that is very old (it will be so rusted, you will spin the nut round, before 
you can get it to loosen!!)........cut it out and replace..........a big 
job.....wheel off, tire off wheel, replace.........and the well known, 
fabulous "reverse the above procedure".......If SS you may be able to tighten 
a loose spoke.......Probably won't hurt much if you have just one or two lo
ose ones..........depends upon how persnickity you are, and how much time you 
have..........<g>.....(when I replace mine.......always spread antisieze 
liberally on the threads....for next time, ya know........course I do that on 
every thread I ever replace............many times, it tells me where I've 
been!!!.....)

I think that if you are doing any kind of wire wheel work......you need a 
dial indicator, base, and roller point.........Harbour Freight.........no big 
bucks!...........take the wheel off, check the run-out on the hub, at the 
edge........if 3-5 thousandsths......ok.......replace the wheel........check 
run out on the wheel, just inside the edge of the rim.........cause the edge 
may be nicked or bent.......if you are 20-30 thousandsths runout, you're 
great.........probably 0.035" is acceptable......more you need to have them 
tuned..........unfortunatly..........painted steel, or chromed 
steel........it will probably be less expensive to buy a new wheel.........if 
stainless........you could beat or break even........

I've been through this many times, on my wife's old Jag, and my 
TR4A.........at least 200 hrs and many $$$.........(all of the spokes on the 
Jag are now SS.........chrome plated steel seems to undergo what is called 
"plating embrittlement" which causes the steel to lose some of it's 
elasticity)........since I've replaced them all with polished SS.......no 
more broken spokes!!!..........Yeahhhhhh!!!!
