Well, I learned my lesson too. What you can do is ask the shipper to
indicate on the package "NO BROKERAGE". That way you can serve as your own
broker. You can drive to the Canada Customs office with the paper work from
UPS and you won't have to pay those ridiculous fees. Other carriers don't
offer that option so be careful. Maybe, you won't get the driver asking you
for money but you will get a bill in the mail from a customs brokerage
house.
