If the engine number shown on your certificate were there just because you
listed it on the application form, the certificate would be of no value
whatever. I don't believe that's what the BMHIT folks do.

Mistakes can happen, of course, but the whole reason for having the
Certificate program--other than issuing fancy pieces of paper--is to
"certify" the correct specifications of the car as originally built,
including the ID number of the engine. (Occasionally, of course, someone may
want a certificate in order to determine the ID of the car that goes with a
particular engine.)

To which Randall Young wrote:

Based on the information in TRF's parts catalog, "Commission numbers for
earlier left-hand drive carburettor models (before 1972 approx.) were
suffixed with the letter L. Later left-hand drive carburettor models were
suffixed with the letter U".

The 'O' in the last position of the commission number, of course, indicates
a car equipped with overdrive.

As to the engine number, ". . . engines exported to U.S.A. type markets were
suffixed with the letter U before the letter E, beginning with the 1972
model year".

As Randall indicated, the 'H' suffix indicates a high compression engine,
and appears as a suffix for all fuel injected engines. Bit of your car were
fuel injected (or had been when built in 1974), your commission number would
have begun with the prefix "CR". So my conclusion would be just the
opposite - it's the "HE" suffix on your certificate that's most likely a
clerical error.

Given the expense of the certificate, I'd ask that it be corrected.
