I went to visit a friend here in Santa Barbara who is a retired automotive
executive who spent many years working for Volvo and then later Saab.
Upon arrival at his home in my white '62 TR 4, I found a white, late-model
TR 6 in his drive.
Turns out the car belongs to a Road & Track art director up from Newport
for the weekend.
He had recently had the car repainted and had not had much opportunity to
drive it since re-assembly.
It was fun putting them side by side for visual comparison, and later we
went for a drive in my car as he had never been in one of the earlier
cars. He liked the flexibility of the four compared to the six, and the
protection the surrey top provided in 'targa mode.'
I couldn't help but ask him about some of the journalists I really enjoy (
i.e., Egan ) and despise ( Yates ), what it was like working for a car
magazine, and did they really have cars thrown at their feet to drive all
the time. ( yep, they do )
"Tell me, is that a dream job?" I asked. "Well, yeh. It really is." was
his reply.
I found it very interesting that given the fleet of cars available to him
to drive from Newport, he chose his TR for the trip up.
Says a lot about a car, don't you think?
