The brass knob is a cover over a nylon(or something like it) plastic snap in
plug.  There is an O ring which is meant to supply the seal.  Two things can
happen AFAIK, the O ring can deteriorate and/or the plug looses some of its
springiness and fits loosely.   Best solution is to find an MG carb and use
the bottom section.  It doesn't have the plug.  You can always save the
original and replace it if needs be.
