Bill, my concern would be whether the plastic valve would take the heat.
The water going through there could potentially be hotter than boiling ...

Chrysler products used to use an in-line cable operated heater valve, which
is what I used on a previous TR3A (and will again if I ever put a heater in
my current one).  You don't have to use the cable (I didn't) but it would
prevent fumbling around trying to turn off a hot valve.  Another option
might be a 1/2" ball valve from Home Depot ...

BTW you can keep the underhood valve, if you're so inclined.  Pipe fittings
will work too.
