I use a home-made steel flat shaped very much like the tool KD 912,
on the web page pointed to by Randall. With an old rocker shaft or
some plastic tabe to protect a new one, it's quick and effective. And
it is well in line with the KISS philosophy.
The tool requires a little bit of reshaping from engine type to
engine type...

Of course with modern day spring technology (I.e. single springs),
'overhead' type compressors work wonders. I did the springs of my
Chrysler V6 twice in one year (in the car) with it. Not for fun
though.
