Header or 4A manifold?
The choice is really up to you.
What do you WANT.

I WANTED a header so I got an old race header and put it on my TR4.
Blasted it off and put some of that Eastwood high temp coating on it.
It did flake off in a few places eventually.

They do get hot, but I never had much in the way of problems.
But then again I didn't drive it that much either though so YMMV.
I also might have had the Early SUs on the car . . which are much farther from
the exhaust and have float bowls on the side.
Put some Strombergs on there with floats on the bottom . . the heat might be
more of a factor.

I have since then put on the TR4A exhaust manifold.
It looks vastly superiour to the old TR4 manifold.

I doubt there's much noticeable performance difference for most people between
the two.

But on the other hand, if you like the header . . . and it makes you happy, get
it. (Jet hot coating is a wonderful thing too)

I'm still undecided on whether or not to stick with the stock exhaust
manifold on my 4A, or go to a header. Kaster (in the Comp Prep Manual) says
the header is good for a 6 HP increase on a hot street engine, throughout
the power range. However I believe he is talking about the pre-4A manifold,
and the doesn't say anything either way in the 4A update section. I've
heard that the 4A manifold is supposed to be superior to the previous ones,
but is the header still better? The one downside I've also heard with
regards to headers is that they increase the temp under the hood (and being
directly under the carbs and intake manifold probably makes it worse). Do
ceramic coating help? I don't really like the looks of header wraps, so I
probably wouldn't do that.
