The resistance provides a minimum amount of field current when the
voltage/current regulator contacts are open.  (It also helps reduce
arcing of the contacts.)  In effect, it sets the minimum charging
level.  I believe that, along with the change in control box, the
generator itself changed, from a 19 amp unit to a 22 amp unit.  Just a
WAG, but I'll bet the two changes are related.

BTW, the screw-terminal and 'Lucar' terminal control boxes will also
interchange, if the terminal issue is dealt with.
